Citrus County Horseback Riding
Crystal River and Citrus County are a great area to ride horses. Many natives own horses and this area produces champion quarter horses. If you are interested in bringing your own horses or if you are considering renting a steed, if you are looking for a day ride or a full equestrian camping trip, horseback riding the beautiful public lands of Crystal River and Citrus County is available to residents and guest. Located in the Citrus area of The Withlacoothie State Forest, Tillis Hill is a horse stable that accommodates 20 horses. There is a 37 site camping area here and one and two day riding trips depart from Tillis Hill. Please call The Florida Department of Forestry at (352)-796-5650 if you are interested in use of the stable.
The Southwest Florida Water Management District has horseback riding trails on both the Flying Eagle and Pott's Preserve. Flying Eagle has nine miles of horse trails. These trails are closed during hunting season. Equestrian camping is allowed, but by permit only. Pott's Preserve has 12 miles of marked trails and allows horse drawn buggies with a permit. There is a limited number of stalls and no charge overnight equestrian camping with a permit. If you are interested in horseback riding on Pott's Preserve, call 1-800-423-1476.
The Withlacoochee State Trial is the latest addition to the Crystal River area horseback riding trail system. This 47 mile former CSX railroad right-of-way permits horseback riding confined to designated bridle paths. For more information, please call (352)-394-2280.
