There are more freshwater springs in Florida than any other state, and Citrus County is especially rich in these natural features. Because large volumes of water that flows to the surface at a constant temperature of 72 degrees all year, the estuaries on the west side of Citrus County that receive the outflow are warm for the manatees that congregate in the winter months. The rivers of Citrus County play host to this country´s largest gathering of manatees and are fasinating to the many visitors who come here to watch them.

Crystal River and Citrus County is home to the largest group of Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers on the Florida Peninsula. Citrus County has also been designated the site for the reintroduction of a migratory flock of Whooping Cranes.
